Love gaming with your buddies but can’t afford to buy your own gear? Microsoft Corp. has news for you. As of June 9th, the Xbox One Kinect console price will be slashed by $100. Don’t get too excited, though. Cutting the price means gutting the experience that makes the console unique – all the cameras and microphones with which your body language controls the system will be excluded from the bargain package.
The Kinect allows XBox to take gaming to the next level, creating an experience that is not only the ultimate in gaming, but also a true virtual reality. Kinect's voice commands allow the system to follow users’ movements and react to their instructions so that they are constantly tuned-in. It can be switched off or paused, as well as controlled from different rooms. Xbox One without Kinect is just another gaming console that provides users with a standard gaming experience.
The full bundled Xbox One, including Kinect, will set you back $499. The “new” Xbox Kinect-free console will be sold for $399. The question is, are the connection and plug-in features worth that extra hundred dollars? Arguably, losing the Kinect is a good business strategy. The $399 price tag puts the Xbox on par with the Playstation 4, which currently outsells the Xbox worldwide.
Microsoft is also giving its users “Live” subscription-free access to apps like Netflix and ESPN. The future of the Xbox still looks uncertain, though, as other features may be slashed.
Does this move make Microsoft better able to compete with rivals like Sony? Users can decide for themselves. We'll wait and see what happens.
