Gaining an effective work / life balance is really difficult, especially if you’re self-employed. Often, the natural tendency is to concentrate too much on work, creating the risk of burnout and problems in your private life.
Here are five tips to help you improve your work / life balance:
If you work on a desktop PC or laptop all day, buy yourself a tablet and use that for Internet activity in the evenings. That way, you get a degree of separation once you’ve shut the work machine down for the day.
If you end up sitting on the couch with your work laptop, you’re going to feel too tempted to do work tasks.
If you run your own business, staying in touch with it during a holiday may be unavoidable, but you must try to minimize your contact. Otherwise, you won’t feel like you’ve truly had a holiday, which is unfair to you and your family.
Spend time before you go away considering everything that could happen and making plans to deal with potential issues that could arise. Make sure whoever is covering for you has all the information he/she needs, so you won’t be contacted constantly.
Don’t be frightened to switch your phone off after hours or on the weekend. Nobody has a right to disturb you at these times.
If, for example, you don’t work weekends, you shouldn’t make exceptions. The old saying of “give them an inch, and they will take a mile” applies here. Don’t let people take advantage of your good nature.
One real benefit of being your own boss is that you’re not restricted to set breaks and lunch hours. Therefore, if you have shopping or other errands to do, fit them into the working day. After all, you have nobody to answer to but yourself!
