Work @ Home Time Management

A dream come true: this is how most people think when they start working at home. They will set their own hours, be their own boss, and have their own space. But as in most dreams there are some clouds. Undoubtedly, one of the biggest challenges that self-employed people face when working at home is how to manage their time efficiently and effectively. A large majority find it hard to keep the balance between personal and work life; they have difficulties staying motivated and on track.

Here are some useful tips to help you calibrate the personal and work life balance:

  • Separate your home office from the rest of the house – an area dedicated to your work will enable you to reach an equilibrium to a great extent.

  • Set your schedule – if it is possible, working hours should be set in advance so the whole family knows when someone is working.

  • Start every day as a business day – a quick reminder that today is a work day will help you stay on track.

  • Don't allow home obligations or errands to distract you – plan your break times ahead so you can stop work on scheduled intervals and take care of your errands or rest.

  • Use productivity tools effectively – technological advancements give you great tools to plan, organize, and execute your work in a more productive and cost effective way.

  • Administrative tasks should be planned daily – taking care of email correspondence, phone calls, reviewing financial matters, etc. should be part of your every day routine. This way they won't pile up and you will keep everything in order.

A well-known trap for self-employed people working at home is the “working all the time” trap. You start working even when you are babysitting, making lunch or playing with your kids. Use of the abovementioned tips will help you keep a schedule and plan shut-off time.

As long as you make an effort to schedule your time, you can be very productive while enjoying the benefits an the benefits and freedom of self-employment.
