Different people have vastly different approaches to their physical appearance. Some people seem as if they never leave the house without completing a long and time-consuming grooming routine, while others seem to pay little heed to what they look like. Obviously there are plenty of different degrees between these extremes too!
Plenty of research has been done relating to physical appearance. Consider the following fascinating facts:
Harvard University research has suggested that males over 6 feet tall typically earn over $5000 more annually than their shorter contemporaries.
Blonde women typically earn over 7% more than those with hair of other colours, according to a study by the University of Queensland. Apparently, the men they marry also earn 6% more than average.
A Duke’s University study proved that white men with “mature looking” features were generally perceived as “more powerful.”
All of these studies (especially the third one) incorporate a degree of subjectivity. However, what is abundantly clear is that people tend to pay a lot of attention to physical appearance, however shallow that may be in the grand scheme of things.
There’s a lot you can learn from this: You may already have encountered differences in the behaviour of those around you based on how you are dressed. People who dress casually are often treated differently by everyone from shop assistants to nightclub doormen than those dressed in smart or smart/casual attire.
If you keep this in mind, you can turn situations to your advantage. Simply tailor your physical appearance (as far as possible) to how you wish to be treated. If people are going to be superficial enough to base so many assumptions on physical appearance, then all you need to do is play them using their own game!
