What Business Ideas Appeal to Apple?

Pretty soon, the old saying about “an apple a day” is going to take on a whole new meaning. The next version of Apple’s iDevice operating system, iOS 8, is showing signs of life, literally. Reports are that the OS will feature an integrated biometrics component, capable of monitoring and tracking your steps, heart rate, blood pressure, and hydration levels. The speculation is that these OS features are being developed for a release to coincide with the launch of a wearable iWatch, which could sync its data back to your iPhone.

There are rumblings that Apple’s developed ways to miniaturize sensors and cram a whole bunch of them into the tiniest of spaces. Apple CEO Tim Cook (or, as he’s known to some, Not Steve) spoke about an imminent boom in “the sensor field” during a conversation about the iWatch, so these reports feel like more than mere rumours. Still, any news about development at Apple should be taken with a grain of salt. If you take that grain of salt, though, it may soon be a reality that your iPhone will warn you about your sodium intake.

And though it’s been rumoured for years that Apple has designs on reshaping the way we watch television, nothing ever seems to come of it. Early last year, breathless, and very specific, reports announced the imminent release of iTV. Described as a “TV ecosystem,” the 60-inch display was at the centre of your iLife, with a wearable pointing iRing replacing the remote control and your media streamed wirelessly to remote devices. “Late 2013/Early 2014” was the rumoured release date and, though we’re past that timeframe, the recent news that Apple bought a small company called LuxVue Technology has revived speculation. LuxVue has developed and produced low-power microLED displays, a technology that seems integral to an iTV product.
