Walgreens Rolls Out New iPhone App Update With iBeacons Support, While Walmart and Motorola Test Out iBeacons

iBeacons are coming to Walgreens – Duane Reade, Walgreens' chain of pharmacy and convenience stores, is updating its iPhone app with iBeacons support. Walgreens, together with Walmart, is the latest big-shot chain that is testing the iBeacons technology. Motorola Solutions is also joining this club, by announcing its indoor-locationing platform, which combines Bluetooth iBeacons and Wi-Fi features.

Duane Reade hopes to improve its customers’ experience in its stores with iBeacons. The iBeacons’ app integration will add lock-screen notifications, to be featured upon approaching a Duane Reade store, certain coupon offers according to historical data, product reviews to help customers decide whether to purchase a product or not, and customers' own Balance® Rewards loyalty program. Walgreens will be testing iBeacons in 10 select Duane Reade stores in Manhattan.

Calvin Peters, PR/Digital Communications Manager for Walgreens, says, "The Duane Reade app plays an integral role in our omni-channel customer engagement strategy. "Mobile interaction is at the core of our social media success as mobile and social are intrinsically linked; the addition of these new 2.0 features, as well as the integration of iBeacon technology, will continue to fuel our digital customer experience strategy, as we strive to push forward our New York Living Made Easy mantra.”

Walmart is also taking the next step with its mobile strategy by testing out iBeacons. While the technology isn’t yet implemented in-store, Walmart notes the company is "pretty excited about iBeacons,” as “knowing where a customer is often helps us serve them better."

Motorola Solutions is introducing the Mpact Platform for Mobile Marketing, or unified indoor locationing technology, that will help organizations meet customer demand. The platform is the first of its kind to integrate Wi-Fi with Bluetooth® Smart technology, enabling shoppers to better locate products in store, read reviews and compare prices, and get customized offers and personal assistance.
