Understanding Twitter search

Understanding Twitter’s search function is the key to finding out what’s going on in the world. A growing number of adults are getting their news from Twitter, and the social media giant uses a particular algorithm to find the tweets that have the most user activity in the form of replies and retweets. Don’t be afraid to jump in and start searching! Here are some useful tips:

Little known tricks

Most Twitter users love the site’s search function, which allows you to manually filter for photos and video. But there are little known tricks too, such as adding “–rt” to a search to remove retweets, which is nice for searching trending topics. You can also create location-based searches by typing “near:(london) within 5mi” to get an idea of what people there are saying.

Saving searches

Once you’ve found a search for a term that you are interested in, you don’t have to try and remember the results forever. You can save your search by hitting the cog button after you’ve searched for a particular term. Twitter allows you to save up to 25 terms at a time, which is handy for users who use the social media site on the go.
