Top 5 Cities That Guarantee Us a Greener Future, #5 Has Its Own Solar-Powered Bus

Solar cities, solar roads, solar buildings: The whole world is working towards a carbon-free future--a future where renewable energies have replaced good old fashioned coal, and where pollution is not among the world’s top priorities. Many cities have already progressed impressively.

1. Oslo, Norway

The Norwegian capital, Oslo, has the lowest carbon emission levels among the European cities with a value of 3.5 tCO2 per capita. In the last four years, the city lowered its CO2 emissions from fossil fuel heating in buildings by 80 per cent. That's a lot! This city plans to cut out fossil fuels entirely by 2020. City buses run on bio-fuel, and they are completely replacing heating oil through the use of renewable energy sources like water, sun and wind, which they have in abundance.

2. Copenhagen, Denmark

The leading and well-known city of bikes, Copenhagen: This town holds the title “European Green Capital,” where almost a third of the residents use bicycle as a transportation method. They are also planning to be carbon free by 2025. Copenhagen is building North Harbour, which is expected to be Northern Europe's largest new urban development area and 100 per cent green.

3. Adelaide, Australia

This city is home to Tindo, the world's first solar-powered bus. Although many cities have experimented with using hybrid or electrical technology in their public transportation, this bus is the world's first that’s 100 per cent solar. And the best part is that the service is free of charge. Convenient isn't it? The city can also be proud of its several green hotels and 29 parks scattered around and its ranking as the seventh most eco-friendly city in the world.

4. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

What North Harbour is to Copenhagen, Masdar city is to Abu Dhabi. This city is designed to provide the highest quality of life with the lowest environmental footprint. The whole city relies on solar energy and other renewable energy sources. Back in 2012 this city was a proud holder of the first rapid charging station for electric vehicles, created in collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.

5. Vancouver, British Columbia

Among the cities fighting for the title of “Greenest City in the World in 2020” is the Canadian city of Vancouver. This city launched an aggressive green initiative five years ago and it is doing very well. They've just put into practice a new building code that requires the use of green materials and low-flow water devices. The water consumption has been lowered by 20 percent in recent years, and the air quality raised as much as more people started using bikes for transportation.
