The US Army is Making a Prototype Iron Man Suit for its Soldiers

We’ve moved beyond the realm of science fiction: Iron Man will join the US army. Kind of. It is not so long ago that Iron Man first appeared on screens across the world, and it was just a matter of time before he would join US soldiers for real. Ok, so it is not Iron Man himself, but his amazing suit that we are talking about. And the time has come: The US military is producing a prototype for a suit similar to this movie character’s.

The suit will make the soldiers stronger, give them real-time battlefield information, monitor their vital signs and even stop their bleeding, giving them an advantage on the battlefield. The suit is lightweight, but still strong enough to protect the soldiers from injuries. It is called TALOS and it stands for the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit. This program represents a collaboration between 56 corporations, 16 government agencies, 10 laboratories and 13 universities. Harvard University has been working on the suit for more than two years.

"This unique collaboration effort is the future of how we should do business," Navy Adm. William H. McRaven said in a statement. "If we do TALOS right, it will be a huge comparative advantage over our enemies and give warriors the protection they need in very demanding environments."

The US Special Operations Command is the organization that is in charge of the TALOS program. Michael Fieldson, the SOCOM civilian in charge of the TALOS project, said: "A suit like this would give us additional protection in a high-threat environment. It's all about protection...I think it would be a significant [advantage], providing protection and additional awareness of the battle space."

The testing of the prototype should begin in June, but the final version is expected to be shown in August 2018. The suit will be outfitted with a computer, Google Glass-like visuals, and sensors for monitoring users’ vital signs. If an injury happens, the suit will administer oxygen and control the hemorrhaging by using smart fabrics.

The US military has been always interested in robots that can support the soldiers on the battlefield. Last year they tested self-driving, machine gun-toting robots, claiming that one day the army could send autonomous machines into battle.
