The Future is Now - 3D Fruit Printing Has Arrived

Every once in a while, a technological innovation appears with the potential to not only offer new possibilities, but revolutionize the world. 3D printing offers this promise. The process of creating real objects from 3D design is already enabling a revolution in the industry of customized and home-made products. The technology, which is basically a form of robotics, has been used for the production and modeling of all kinds of objects ranging from tools to toys, from clothing to food.

3D printing has been used recently to produce chocolate and other types of candy, and has been applied to the creation of new shapes and customized designs. The same approach has been used to make pizza, ravioli, nuggets, and , most recently, fruit.

If, in the past, fruit was picked from trees, it seems that in the near future it will be printed. Dovetailed, a Cambridge-based design company, created a 3D fruit printer that can print any type of fruit. What was until recently seen only in SF films is now the new technological reality.

The 3D-printed fruit is not quite the real thing but a replica combining individual liquid droplets with flavors to make “fruit” of different shapes and sizes. The result is an endless possibility of flavor combinations with the potential to expand our dining experiences. The printer uses a molecular-gastronomy technique called spherification to produce a fruit that is 100% organic. This technology is aimed not only at foodies or professional chefs, but also the home cook. The future has arrived at last.
