Ten Apps That Can Actually Save You Money

Apps designed for your smartphones increase your devices’ functionality in many ways. Here are 10 apps that can actually save you money every day.

Pushpins and RetailMeNot

Coupon lovers need these two apps. With Pushpins, you can scan barcodes on any item to see if there are applicable coupons available. If there are, they’re instantly added to your loyalty card for redemption at the checkout counter.

RetailMeNot is similar except that it doesn’t require a store card. Simply download the coupons, and apply them whenever you’re making a purchase. You can do this for both in-store and online purchases.

CardStar

CardStar allows you to register all of your loyalty cards. This enables you to trace which of your favourite shops are having sales or running promotions. It’s also a good way to thin out your wallet.

ShopKick

This app makes loyalty cards completely obsolete by letting you earn “kicks” (points) whenever you scan anything you buy. The kicks can then be converted into gift vouchers. As an added bonus, ShopKick also displays items on sale.

Groupon

Groupon is like the polar opposite of regular coupon applications. Instead of checking if an item has a coupon, you check coupons for available offerings. It requires advance payment, but you can redeem at any time within the applicable period.

SavedPlus

This app makes sure you don’t spend everything in one place. You can set it to put aside a percentage of the price of a purchase and transfer it from a chequing account to your savings.

Happy Hours

If you like margaritas, the app gives you a rundown of restaurants in your area that have happy hours. You can also get great deals on appetizers and desserts.

RepairPal

Car trouble can wipe out savings in a hurry, but with RepairPal you can keep the damage to a minimum by getting the job done right the first time. Get estimates online and get recommendations for the best local shops.

GasBuddy

This app lets you find the best gas prices in the area and ask for assistance in case of empty tank syndrome. You also get points for posting gas prices in your area.

KidsEatFor

You can save a bundle with this app if you have children. KidsEatFor lets you know which restaurants dole out free or discounted kiddie meals for every paid adult meal.
