Google is preparing for a new endeavour in the TV entertainment sector, as newly revealed documents report the creation of a TV set-top box, dubbed Android TV. According to reports, Google wants to be present in your living room, providing a simpler, more user-friendly experience than the 2012 Google TV was able to offer.
Google, it seems, has been reminded of the concept that “simpler is better” – which has for so long been the key ingredient of its success – and that it should also be applied to its TV set-top box. Henceforth, the tech giant will be returning to its roots with the Android TV set, to do what it knows how to do best: offer a simply-constructed interface which will enable a content-suggesting homescreen.
Where, previously, Google TV users were obliged to enter separate apps such as Netflix and Hulu to search for content, the reported Android TV set-top box will come with both remote and voice control devices, to easily navigate through the content.
As the exclusive Google documents state, the new TV device “is an entertainment interface, not a computing platform. It's all about finding and enjoying content with the least amount of friction. Access to content should be simple and magical.”
Further improvements noted in the reports include removing unnecessary features like cameras and touchscreen support, among other things, and inserting outsider apps such as Vevo and Pandora. These apps will be additions to the already-provided Google-owned apps and games, such as Play Movies, YouTube, and Hangouts.
If these reports are true, then Google's set-top box – Android TV – will prove to be a useful and deserving competitor to Roku and Amazon Fire TV.
Still, these reports are unofficial, no real announcement has been made by the company thus far, and a launch date has not yet been established. What Google has in store for us can still only be guessed, but Android TV appears to have a bright future ahead.
