Pinning is a verb we’ve seen more frequently in recent years. Pinterest, founded in 2010, is a social networking site with a “virtual pinboard” interface. Instead of putting photos on your wooden pinboard at home, you collect photos and links to products that you have, love, or want to own while following other people’s pinboards at the same time.
The recent study made by RJMetrics about Pinterest, where 50,000 random pinners were questioned, reveals some shocking and interesting insights into the website.
This site is definitely favoured by the female population. 92 per cent of all pins are made by women. And they are pretty loyal as well. 84 per cent of them have been active since Pinterest first launched four years ago. In the first year of its existence, the average female user posted 42 pins and now the number has reached an astonishing 158 pins per average female over the past year.
Girls are mostly sharing pins about “food and drinks,” taking 20% of all total pins. Then come “home decor” and good old “fashion” pins in terms of prevalence.
Despite the increase in women pinning, the number of male pins has been declining for some time.
And how are pinners acting throughout the day?
The pinning spike happens in the evenings, with steady pinning occurring throughout the day. This surely shows how deeply Pinterest is embedded in peoples’ lives.
Pinterest has done something right, and they are set up for success.
