Overcome your Professional Plateau with These Five Tips

The status-quo bias is an irrational but common desire to maintain routine and avoid change. While scheduling and strategies are good templates for getting yourself organized and boosting productivity, too much consistency can remove the decision-making process from the work day and create a feeling of being stuck. A small change of habits will cause a slight increase in productivity but progress halts again eventually. This feeling of “plateauing” is frustrating, but also an opportunity to step back and reassess yourself and your goals. No matter what craft you are trying to master or improve, managing these plateaus is essential to unlocking your potential.

Tip 1. Assess your past

Expectations and assumptions patterns will repeat themselves can hinder progress. We are products of our past, but we shouldn't be prisoners of it. Mistakes happen so that we can learn from them.

Tip 2.Examine your blocks

When you feel weak or incapable of overcoming an obstacle, it is time to reassess what is blocking your progress. Sometimes our inner critic is hindering our thinking and causing feelings of inadequacy. Re-framing our view of ourselves can often change our perspective on our work and help us see new ways of doing things.

Tip 3. Ask for information rather than making assumptions

The belief that the thoughts or feelings of others can be predicted or read is a false assumption. When it comes to dealing with employees and their behavior, it is advisable to ask people what they are thinking and what motivates them rather than jumping to conclusions.

Tip 4. Examine your to-do list

Sometimes there is an item on your list that you think you should prioritize when in fact you are avoiding other, more important, tasks. Periodical re-evaluation of our priorities can reveal whether such tasks are necessary. Many people will fill their day with busy work to avoid, for example, working on a public speech that is anxiety-inducing. Make better use of your time and talents by establishing priorities that will increase, rather than stall, your productivity.

Tip 5.You are your choices

Sometimes achieving a goal is not a matter of whether we want something enough, but whether we are willing to make the necessary choices to achieve it. Sacrifices must be made in order to make your dreams come true.
