New Messaging Battle Is On The Horizon - Facebook Launches a New App After Being Ditched By Snapchat

“If you can't fight them, buy them!” is the kind of motto we’d associate with Mark Zuckerberg, for sure. But is this always the case or is he being just a little bit paranoid? Regardless, recently, he was willing to drop $3 billion in cash to buy Snapchat.

This is not the first time he has spent so much money on something only because of a hunch he had. He already gave $1 billion for Instagram, feeling that it would be worth ten times more. Luckily, or not, Snapchat's CEO, Evan Spiegel, decided to turn down the crazy offer with an explanation: “There are very few people in the world who get to build a business like this. I think trading that for some short-term gain isn’t very interesting.”

So, “When you can't buy them, fight them!” was what happened in this case. When the first motto didn't work and after being rejected, Mark turned the page and decided to fight. After a few months of preparation, Snapchat finally got a rival, Slingshot. This video chat app by Facebook should allow users to send short video messages using a touch-screen similar to Snapchat.

So what's with Zuckerberg’s crazy obsession with Snapchat? He already tried to mimic it with Poke in 2012, an app that allowed photos and videos to disappear 10 seconds after viewing, but it failed miserably so they decided to remove it. Snapchat's app, on the other hand, was so popular that American schoolteachers said that they had to ban students’ smartphones because they were distracting the class enormously.

“In 16 years of teaching I can’t think of anything that has ever disrupted my classroom more than today’s Snapchat update,” tweeted Tracie Schroeder, a Kansas high school science teacher.

So, is this where Snapchat's biggest advantage rests? In Teenagers?! Zuckergerg saw that they are the key to the success and that was the reason for the $3 billion he was ready to give.

“Snapchat over-indexes with the very segment where Facebook has cited falling engagement: teenagers,” said Geoff Blaber, mobile analyst at CCS Insight. “The continued introduction of new services, either organically or by acquisition, is essential to maintaining user engagement.”

Slingshot will be launched this month and everybody is wondering whether there a possibility for this app to reach Snapchat's glory. We should be able to see the results in the near future.

As Mr Blaber said: “When you’re coming to market late and trying to compete with what is already a service with a very large user base, it becomes very difficult to close that gap, even for a company like Facebook.”
