New Couple in the Technology World: Netflix and Verizon Are Joining Forces

Netflix, the digital video company, signed a streaming deal on Monday with Verizon Communications. This agreement will provide improved connectivity to customers served by the ISP (Internet Service Provider).

"We have reached an interconnect arrangement with Verizon that we hope will improve performance for our joint customers over the coming months," announced Netflix in a statement. Both companies do not reveal further information, but according to rumours, it is a very similar agreement to the one Netflix signed with Comcast in February.

Like Verizon, AT&T also revealed that it too has been negotiating with Netflix about a similar idea. Netflix wouldn't comment precisely on the negotiations between both companies, but has previously explained that it's been in contact with more Internet provider players about its Open Connect content delivery network.

The Verizon deal comes after the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) offered the challenging plan for an open Internet, which evoked strong reactions in consumers that are afraid  that net neutrality could be endangered.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has recently shared his own opinion about this subject, strongly supporting net neutrality: “The essence of net neutrality is that ISPs such as AT&T and Comcast don't restrict, influence or otherwise meddle with the choices consumers make.(...)While in the short term Netflix will in cases reluctantly pay large ISPs to ensure a high quality member experience, we will continue to fight for the Internet the world needs and deserves.”

Verizon has had previous concerns about Netflix streaming. Even though Netflix has officially denied any problems on its end, it turned out that users are having real issues with the content. With this deal between the companies, concerns of this kind will probably disappear.
