Magnate Elon Musk presents the future of space flight with SpaceX

Canadian-American business magnate Elon Musk presented the future of manned commercial spacecraft yesterday.

The new craft, called SpaceX, is an upgrade to the Dragon V2, the first commercial spacecraft to bring cargo to the International Space Station. The advantage of SpaceX, aside from the fact that it is cheaper, is that it is designed to touch down “anywhere in the world.”

Musk points out that the expensive spacecrafts shouldn’t be tossed away after each use like Q-Tips.

“If aircrafts were thrown out after each flight, no one would be able to fly,” says

Musk.

He adds that the cockpit designers went for a something clean and functional.

The control panel flips down like a car visor, and all of the emergency buttons are within arm’s reach.

The interior is like nothing seen before in previous spacecrafts. Elon Musk presented to the public a futuristic design with room for seven seats for human passengers. And yes, there are large touchscreens instead of instrument panels.

The number of astronauts is the same as the Space Shuttle carried. Space.com points out that this is twice the capacity of the Russian Soyuz craft. This could be a good thing, given that at the moment NASA is dependent on the Soyuz system and is having something of a dispute with the Russian space agency. The Russian Deputy Prime Minister made a remark heard round the world last month when he said that the US could use trampolines instead of their space programme.
