Is Apple Buying Beats for Video More Than for Music or Headphones? This is What Steve Jobs' Biographer Thinks

According to Dan Lyon and his reporting for Billboard, Apple fans are facing up to the fact that Jobs’ vision of Apple is finally dead, as the company is drifting away in another direction.

As expected, the Apple-Beats deal is the main subject these days and there are a lot of predictions made about why a company like Apple would be interested in the audio and music service firm. Walter Isaacson, the man who wrote the book on Steve Jobs, has more information than we think.

This is what Lyon reports: “Isaacson thinks the Apple-Beats deal is not about headphones or streaming music but rather about video. He speculates that Cook wants Iovine to run Apple’s content business and help Apple launch the TV product that analysts have been gossiping about for years. The product has been held up because Apple can’t get all the content owners on board.”

Lyon confirms that Isaacson shared with him information that he didn't publish in the Biography of Steve Jobs: Jobs wanted to buy Universal by Jimmy Iovine in 2002 or 2003. This obviously didn't happen and now Apple has announced a deal to buy Beats Electronic, co-founded by Iovine.

The prediction that Iovine will run Apple's business, made by Isaacson, is confirmed by The Wall Street Journal, which reports that this kind of acquisition will put Iovine in an executive position with Apple

Isaacson predictions are that the expected $3.2 billion acquisition of Beats will put Iovine in charge of its content. The main question that remains unanswered is whether buying Beats would be the quickest way to buy Iovine and to deliver the ultimate Apple experience or could Apple have hired Iovine with no intentions to involve headphones and music services?
