How to Stay Happy as a Retiree?

Retirement can be a wonderful thing. Vacationing, family visits, and catching up on some long-neglected reading can fill a retiree’s twilight with joy. Unfortunately, it’s not always quite so simple. Many retirees live on limited budgets, and find the abundance of free time more a burden of boredom than a blessing of leisure.

So what’s the secret?

It’s all about investing in the quality of your life.

Health

The first thing a retiree needs to do to stay happy? Stay healthy. Mobility and mental acuity are the two most important resources a retiree has. This means getting proper nutrition, exercise, and mental stimulation. These are good practices for any stage of life, but during retirement they become especially important. As human beings age, our healing processes slow down, and our body’s elasticity decreases--unless it’s diligently maintained.

Different far eastern practices such as Yoga and Tai Chi are well known for keeping arthritis and immobility at bay. More importantly, they keep the mind occupied with learning a new skill, rather than preoccupied with the many stresses of an uncertain world.

Which is why it’s so important to have…

Hobbies

Anything that can keep your mind off of the 24/7 cable “news” feed (which I’m convinced is trying to put us all into an early grave) is a worthwhile pursuit. Hobbies are essential to a good quality of life. They require attention, motivation, and active participation. Activity is the main thing we all need when we retire. The human animal is not meant to be idle. Idleness leads to dullness and lack of purpose. Without purpose, there’s no point, and with no point, how can you be expected to keep a sunny disposition?

Hobbies will keep you from getting bored, and allow you to experience all the things you never had time for when you were still working. Finally, a physically active hobby can keep you healthy too!

Passions

The only thing left, once you’ve covered health and avoided boredom, is to follow your dreams. Time is a precious gift and we’re only granted a finite amount. Retirement is the perfect moment to cross out every item on your bucket list. Moreover, it’s the chance to fulfill whatever unfulfilled ambitions you have left.

Retirement can be a time for celebration or stagnation. Don’t cheat yourself out of the best years of your life!
