Would you describe your life as “perfect?” If so, lucky you! However, most people have at least some areas of their life that they’d like to be better or different.
Obviously, there are times when you can’t instantly change things that are beyond your control. Perhaps you need to stay in a job that’s not ideal for you, or your current choices are restricted by issues related to health, finances or family?
If this is the case, the only thing you can do is to make the best of the cards you’ve been dealt. Here are some useful hints to help you do so:
Your current situation isn’t permanent—nothing in life is. However, it’s easy to become caught up in the present and lose sight of this indisputable fact.
If you’re not happy with certain things in your life, that doesn’t mean you can’t make a plan to improve them.
Of course you probably don’t have the luxury of being able to, for example, walk away from the job that’s grinding you down. But that doesn’t mean you can’t plan for what you want to be doing a year from now. Once you’ve made a plan, you can work out what small steps you have to take to make it come to fruition.
Even if everything seems cloudy right now, there are usually some small things that happen each day that you will appreciate.
So keep track of them: Try to write a list of three things that have made you smile each day—anything from the colour of the sunset to an amusing comment from your child. Then, when life gets you down, you can refer back and remember all the things you have to be thankful for.
As we said above, you won’t always be able to instantly invoke huge life changes, but you can always make small amendments to your existence. Cook something different, walk a different route to work, or just listen to some new music. There’s nothing to say that every day of your life need be exactly the same.
