If you’re looking to sell your products online, there are now lots of excellent e-commerce platforms to help with the process. However, with so many options, how can you pick the platform that’s right for you? Today, we look at the pros and cons of three of the leading e-commerce sites: Magento, Shopify, and Bigcommerce.
How good are your computer skills? And how much time are you willing to put into the programming of your site? Shopify tops the list as the most intuitive and simple to set up, with excellent customer service options. Bigcommerce is also designed with user-friendliness in mind, and offers a range of templates for an out-of-the-box solution. Magento is an open-source platform, which means you’ll be able to fully customize your site but will need to either have some decent technical skills of your own or hire a developer.
Both Shopify and Bigcommerce offer beautiful templates to let you quickly set up a stylish online store. However, you run the risk of your shop looking just like everyone else’s. It’s a little trickier to set up a fully working Magento store, and if you don’t know what you’re doing it won’t immediately look as attractive as Shopify and Bigcommerce. However, you will end up with a unique shop design that sets your company apart.
Magento is free—all you will have to pay for is hosting and any extensions you choose. If you’ve got some technical skills and want a low-cost option, this is the one to go for. However, if you’ll need to hire a developer, you’re better off investing in one of the paid options. Shopify costs less to set up initially, but its basic plans don’t include all the features you might need. This means you’ll probably have to buy add-ons along the way. Bigcommerce has the largest start-up cost, but this one-off payment will give you access to a huge range of features, right from the outset.
