How Being Poor Can Motivate You

Poverty is often associated with a lack of motivation. At least that is what this study suggests about American attitudes toward poverty. Approximately 50% of affluent respondents stated that they believe poor people are unmotivated. But, in fact, a lack of motivation is often an effect of poverty, rather than a cause. In other words, you can become unmotivated because you are poor. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Below are two ways that being poor can motivate you to improve your circumstances.

Use the Hunger

Have you ever noticed how good the simplest meal can taste when you’re really hungry? The prospect of a good meal can drive you to work more efficiently so you can finally sit down and enjoy a hot dinner. This same hunger can be used to drive success. Instead of satiating a physical need, you strive to satisfy the hunger of ambition.

It could seem like materialism, but that’s more of a side effect. What most poor people lack is control over where they live, who they meet, what they eat, and how their children will grow up. To satisfy this dearth, you can steel your resolve and work hard so that you get to call the shots over your own life. Use the hunger to drive you into action rather than apathy.

Use Your Resources

They say necessity is the mother of invention, and they weren’t just talking about stuff you take to the patent office. When you’re poor, you don’t often have many options, but you can always leverage the ones you do. Because you have few resources, you find ways to make do, and this is a habit that can help you achieve success in the long run.

Resourcefulness is one of the most prized characteristics a person can possess, because it is so rare. People who aren’t in need seldom have a “can-do” attitude, because everything is handed to them on a silver platter. When it comes to a crisis the resourceful crowd are the ones who can rise to the occasion. Learn to work with what you have, and in the end you will have more than those who started out with the silver spoon.
