Foursquare Announces Swarm: A Separate App for Check-ins

Yesterday, Foursquare announced that they will split their famous app into two. While you can use Foursquare to discover and search for new places, the new app called Swarm will be more focused on the social aspects, and use a so-called social map to allow you to see where your friends are, at anytime.  It will also allow you to keep up with each other without having to send separate messages.

According to Foursquare, “We spend a lot of time talking to people about Foursquare, and we constantly hear they use Foursquare for two things – to keep up and meet up with their friends, and to discover great places. Every month, tens of millions of people open up the app to do each.”

The problem is that when the app is being used, it is used for one thing only. That was the main reason why they decided to separate these experiences into two apps: Foursquare, and the new app Swarm. Foursquare was motivated to make this change due to having to compete with the other social platforms, and the fact that the “check- in to a location” feature is available to almost all of them now.

Now you don't have to ask your friends about their current location. With Swarm, it will be easier and faster to see which of your friends are nearby, and share what you are doing. The app will be available for Android and on iOS soon, and also for the Windows Phone.

Furthermore, the company announced that in the near future the Foursquare app is going to make some changes as well. “An app should be able to answer questions like ‘give me a great date dinner spot’ and not just ‘tell me the nearest gas station.’ We’re right now putting the final touches on this new, discovery-focused version of Foursquare. It’ll be polished and ready for you later this summer.”

According to Foursquare, “The two apps have been built to work seamlessly together… and we can’t wait until both apps are in your hands.”  Now, we only have to wait a few more weeks before we can  try and “check-in” our location with Swarm.
