The phrase “moderation in all things” is believed to have first been said by Roman dramatist Terence, dating back to around 170BC. It’s certainly a good rule to live by, especially if you wish to keep your weight down without feeling constantly deprived.
However, there are some foods that really WILL make you quickly pile on the pounds. Here is a list of five of them:
Creamy soups may be warm and comforting, but the cream and milk that’s usually involved in producing them makes for a high-calorie treat.
Switch to a soup based on a vegetable broth instead, and you can enjoy something just as warm and life affirming without shocking the scales.
If you really want to (quite literally) pour calories into yourself, you can’t go far wrong with a thick chocolate milkshake. Milk, cream, sugar and chocolate make for a seriously fatty treat.
If you can’t resist the temptation, skip the cream on the top and ask for your drink to be made “skinny,” with skimmed milk. Better yet, have a pure fruit smoothie instead!
Continuing on a dairy theme, cheesecake truly is a vehicle for fat. According to WebMD, just one slice of Oreo cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory contains over 1000 calories. This is more than a lot of main meals!
Sometimes adding fries to your meal can double the calories. A six-ounce portion of McDonald’s’ fries runs to nearly 600 calories!
You’re better off waiting until you can cook at home, and having a baked potato instead when you need that carb fix.
Salads are supposed to be healthy, but salads dripping with mayonnaise are really not.
If you really want a creamy dressing, go for something made with sour cream instead. Even better, choose a vinaigrette.
