They say you can't always get what you want. Well, what if you could by asking in a different way? It's called negotiation, a process by which you reach some sort of an agreement or compromise, or you settle some differences without getting into an argument. So, how can you become a better negotiator?
Collaborate, don't compete. Create a win-win situation. No one wants to lose. In negotiation, both, or all, parties want to reach a positive outcome.
Listen more and talk less. When silent, you will lose the nervousness and you'll find out more about the other party.
Know the facts. Know everything. Know where you stand, where the other party stands, what you are willing to put out there, and what they are likely to throw at you. Don't be taken aback.
Build a relationship. A long-lasting relationship makes negotiating easier for you in the future, but it also makes your world of business more valuable.
Don't use bold sentences. Try to avoid giving ultimatums. Don't bring in the “take-it-or-leave-it” tactics, as you'll end up losing more than what you started with.
Talk about alternatives. Keep your options open. If you can't get what you want, you could always ask for something else.
Keep emotions to yourself because, as they say, “It's nothing personal, just business.” Stick to your goals, and if it gets intense, walk away and agree on a next meeting.
Seal the deal. Whatever the outcome of the negotiation, ask for it in writing. Unless you're willing to negotiate for the thing once again, sign it and seal it.
