Do You Have What It Takes To Be A Leader?

Napoleon Bonaparte is famously quoted as saying that a leader is a “dealer in hope.” Do you think that this description applies to you?

Not everyone is cut out to lead a team or an organization. Some people prefer to keep their head down and simply concentrate on the job at hand. In this article we present five questions to help you determine whether you have the right qualities to be an effective leader.

Can you listen?

Leadership is a two-way street. A one-way street is more akin to dictatorship! Being a good leader means motivating your team by being sensitive to their concerns and motivations—not simply barking orders.

Are you consistently positive?

Would you describe your outlook on life as “glass half full” or “glass half empty?” If it’s the latter, you’re going to struggle to inspire and motivate people. Every team and organization will experience difficulties and setbacks, and it’s up to the leader to keep up morale.

Can you cope with making difficult decisions?

Leaders need to make decisions that won’t prove popular with everyone. Sometimes you may need to make sacrifices for the greater good. If you think you will falter in making these decisions, leadership may not be for you.

Are you consistent?

Good leaders are also good role models. This means leading by example and consistently behaving in the way you expect your team to behave.

If you turn up every Monday with a hangover, how can you expect your team members not to do the same thing?

Do you have vision?

Leadership is about far more than day-to-day operations. You also need to have a constant eye on the big picture, and drive things forward appropriately. If you think you can strike the right balance between strategy and minutiae, then you may well have good leadership qualities.
