Cities You Wouldn't Dare To Move To

It is possible to provide security against other ills, but as far as death is concerned, we men live in a city without walls.

—Epicurus

At some point we’ve all dreamt of moving into our dream house in our dream city and living a fairy tale existence. But have you ever imagined yourself in the midst of some dystopian fantasy where you had to move into the city of your nightmares? Of course, one man’s meat is another man’s poison — and there are plenty of people living “normal” lives in circumstances that you and I might not even be able to properly conceive of.

Let’s take a look at some of these cities that have been ranked by various media outlets as the “most dangerous” or “most unliveable” cities in the world.

How Do You Think You Would Fare In…

San Pedro Sula, Honduras

According to a study by Mexico’s Citizens' Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice, San Pedro Sula has the world’s highest murder rate with 169 homicides per 100,000 people (based on 2011 data) per year. Mexico’s own legendary tourist resort city of Acapulco came in at number two with 143 per 100,000.

Kabul, Afghanistan

It should come as no surprise that the capital city of a country that has been war-torn for almost the entire century so far would be considered dangerous. India’s Zee TV News places Kabul at the top of its World’s Most Dangerous Cities list.

Detroit, Michigan

America’s classic boom and bust city, Detroit has definitely seen better days. Despite an improvement in violent crime statistics from 2012 to 2013, the FBI ranks Detroit as the most dangerous city in the United States.

Damascus, Syria

Again, war-torn cities offer no surprises in terms of quality of life. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit, the Syrian capital’s liveability dropped 20% from 2012 to 2013 and is at the bottom of their Global Liveability Ranking and Report for August 2013.

Harbin, China

While many may disagree that Harbin is unliveable, the recent “Airpocalypse” of smog that’s plaguing China’s megalopolises is not helping their argument. An opinion piece in Foreign Policy magazine maintains that the Chinese approach to urbanisation and industrialisation coupled with Harbin’s bitingly cold winters does not a liveable city make. The author must not have attended Harbin’s annual ice festival.
