Best Airports to Enjoy Your Transit Time

If you fly a lot I’m sure you’ll agree: There’s nothing worse than being stuck in an airport with nothing to do but sit in a plastic chair and stare at a TV screen with the sound turned off.

These days, seasoned travellers demand far more than a restroom and a gift shop during layovers. Many major airports are attempting to attract more passengers by doubling as shopping malls and entertainment complexes. If you can pick up a birthday present for a loved one, lose a small fortune on the roulette table and top it off with fine dining and a relaxing massage, the layover just might become the most eventful part of travelling.

Here is a short list of some of the best airports for stopovers between flights.

Singapore’s Changi Airport has a butterfly garden, a swimming pool and free massage chairs. It’s no wonder it picked up the 2014 World Airport Award for best overall airport. Changi is also the best airport in which to catch some Z’s, according to the Guide to Sleeping in Airports.

Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport is huge, has loads of shopping and a casino to gamble away all those leftover euros—which is much more fun than changing them back into dollars. For those in search of culture, it’s got a branch of the National Museum of the Netherlands and a library.

Dubai Airport is the place to change planes if you’re looking for extravagance. Besides a gym, pool and spa, Dubai is home to the largest duty-free airport shop. There’s even a place to buy gold bars.

Hong Kong Airport is perfect for those who don’t like to sit still while waiting for their connection. Leisure activities include a regulation nine-hole golf course, various sport simulators and an IMAX cinema.

Munich Airport, unlike some bland way stations, actually makes you feel like you’re in a foreign country with its authentic beer gardens and on-site brewery. It’s also the winner of the 2104 World Airport Award for the best airport in Europe.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport was ranked the best in the US in a Travel and Leisure survey. Respondents gave high marks to its food offerings, shopping, cleanliness, staff and baggage handling.

Incheon Airport in South Korea was ranked number one by Airports Council International seven years in a row through 2012 for its great views, cleanliness, rest areas and food.

London Heathrow may be massive and intimidating, but it’s softening its image with an impressive art gallery and its own version of the quintessential high-end London shopping experience. It has also probably got the biggest variety of dining options of any airport in the world.
