Are You a Dreamer Or a Doer? Follow These Steps to Become a Successful Entrepreneur

When referring to a successful entrepreneur, the adjectives often used are “visionary,” “farsighted,” or “genius.” These lucky folks are also associated with the ability to “think outside the box” and to be “creative.” The common belief, however, is that successful entrepreneurs are usually doers. In other words: they’re process people.

Paraphrasing T. E. Laurence, everybody dreams, but those who dream wide awake are the most dangerous. Do you really have to choose between one or the other? Read on to find out.

Dream Constructively

Pipe dreams belong to the land of fiction. Use your creative juices to think of new things that have practical value. Give yourself permission to listen to your inner muse and get at the essence of what appeals to you. Chances are it appeals to a lot of other people as well!

Take Notes

When you get ideas, jot them down. If you don’t, you’re likely to forget them. It doesn’t matter if they sound ridiculous, these are the roots of real ideas. You’ve got to look at the big picture. A lot of people thought human flight was a crazy idea too.

Narrow the Focus

Take your ideas one by one and think about how you can make them reality. Do the research to find out what you’ll need in terms of resources: capital, labour, materials, etc. Establish goals so that you know whether you’re making progress. If something seems unworkable, set it aside to simmer and focus on something else. You will probably work out a solution when you aren’t looking for it!

Make a Business Plan

If you already have a workable idea, it’s time to take action. Calculate the finances, find the people, source suppliers, and establish procedures. It may take several drafts, but don’t allow yourself to get sidetracked. You can always think of new ideas after you’ve built a solid foundation for your business.

Find Your Role

At each stage of planning, you are the central figure. In order to make a business successful, however, you need to get down to the daily grind. Ask yourself what roles do you have to assume in order to benefit the business the most.
