If you use your iPhone a bit too much while driving, then you're in for some good news. At an auto show in Geneva, Switzerland, Apple launched CarPlay – the ultimate iPhone experience for a safer and smarter drive. Available exclusively on selected vehicles in 2014, CarPlay allows you to make calls, get directions, send and receive messages and listen to music – all while your eyes are fixed on the road.
To use CarPlay, simply plug in your iPhone and explore the smartphone on your dashboard. The CarPlay technology features a touchscreen, mounted on your car's centre console, with buttons for various functions like phone calls, messages, maps and music. So, when you want to make a call, play a song, or use Maps, all you have to do is touch CarPlay's screen.
CarPlay also features buttons on the steering wheel to connect with Siri, the voice command system by Apple. If you want to use this digital assistant, just push and hold the voice control button on the wheel, and you'll activate Siri, with no attention drawn away from the road. Siri allows you to dictate responses to messages, make calls, or get access to contacts. Siri can also read messages to you, so all you need to do is listen.
According to Apple, CarPlay also works with the buttons, dials, and knobs in your car.
CarPlay works very well with Maps, providing traffic conditions, as well as great driving directions, while suggesting new places based on holiday destinations. CarPlay also supports apps on your iPhone, like Spotify, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, Beats Music and Podcasts.
The new CarPlay technology will be available on Volvo, Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz vehicles in 2014, but also on BMW, Chevrolet, Nissan, Ford, KIA, Land Rover, Mitsubishi Motors, Opel, Peugeot Citroen, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota vehicles in the future. The CarPlay will work with the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5 smartphones.
