Antibacterial Soap, Benefits vs. Risks

Potential Benefits

Companies that sell antibacterial soap claim that it is safer and promotes greater health than traditional soaps. Antibacterial soaps have chemicals such as triclocarban and triclosan that have recently been flagged by the FDA. These chemicals can be found in certain medicines and certain doctors will vouch for their ability to eliminate more than just 99.9% of harmful germs.

Potential Risks

There is a reason that antibacterial soaps were red-flagged by the FDA. Their claims of being more effective than traditional soaps have not been backed up by scientific studies. Further, some studies point to antibacterial products as actually harmful, because they create bacterial resistance, which makes you more likely to fall susceptible to harmful bacteria.

The FDA Has Compelled Companies to Show Data

The FDA has ordered companies that make antibacterial soap to produce information that backs up their claims. While the benefits to using antibacterial soap are sketchy at best, the risks are definitely documented by the scientific community. For those not well-versed in medicine, it’s likely best to avoid antibacterial soaps for the time being.
