If you are a passionate comic book buyer or lover, and have been using Amazon's Comixology app, you may not be happy about a recent announcement.
Amazon's Comixology, the online comic book store which they bought just few weeks ago, is upgrading its previous iOS app to a new version which removes your ability to buy comics from your previous iOS app. With the new app it is still possible to browse and download free comics, but if you want to own a paid version, you will only be able to do this through Comixology's mobile website. However, even though the iPhone and iPad app are cut off, you can still buy books with the Android app.
You are obviously wondering, why now this downside upgrade? The Apple's App Store has a policy of receiving a 30% cut of all app purchases and subscriptions. This way, when you buy the comic book directly from the Comixology website, Amazon is not forced to pay a 30% cut to Apple. Nice, isn't it?
As an explanation for this change, Comixology VP of Communications Chip Mosher says: “As we move to complete the acquisition with Amazon, we are shifting to the web-based purchasing model they've successfully used with the Kindle, which we expect will allow us to strike the best balance between prices, selection and customer experience.”
The Android app needs to be updated to the new 3.6 version, where users need to renew their payment information so they can continue to shop. For iPhone and iPad users there is a step-by-step explanation how to install the new app on the comixology.com website.
Also, in the next few days a $5 eGift Card will be offered to the potentially upset, yet loyal customers, to ease the transition.
