They're finally here – the 2014 Winter Olympics. Taking place at the “Fisht” Olympic Stadium in Sochi, Russia, the Olympics kick off with today's opening ceremony, which is said to be the most expensive and fascinating event of all time Olympics. The Ceremony will begin at 20.14 Moscow Time (17.14 CET), time which stands for the year of the first Russian Winter Games.
As scandalous as the Games may have appeared in pictures in the past weeks, with catastrophic hotel rooms, streets under construction, double toilet situations, brown water, and even bombing threats, the Olympics boast a spectacular, technologically innovative upcoming opening ceremony, with ballet, circus and acrobatic performances, staging Russia's history.
The biggest Olympic spectacle is the lightning of the Olympic flame. And this year, the torch had made quite a disastrous trip. Reaching beds of lakes, peaks of mountains, the North Pole and the International Space Station, the torch had met activists, protesters, and had run down streets. Moreover, its flame had been extinguished a few times, even a man had died of a heart attack.
It is rumored that there will be a tiny change in the Parade of Nations. In this exhibit, the athletes walk around, representing their countries and national colours, usually in alphabetical order, only this time the athletes will parade in the order of the Russian, or Cyrillic, spelling of the countries.
The Sochi Games will challenge both male and female competitors in 12 new events in 8 disciplines this year, for a modern and younger Olympic program. The total of 15 disciplines include: alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, luge, Nordic combined, short track, skeleton, ski jumping, snowboard, and speed skating.
The 22nd Winter Olympic Games will be opened today, 7th February and closed on 23rd. The Opening Ceremony of the Paralympic Winter Games will be held on March 7th, while the Closing Ceremony on March 16th, 2014.
