Having a place of your own certainly has its perks. You can design and furnish it as you wish, you can invite others to come in or choose to keep them out, and you can take pride in all milestones of making it yours. As one learns, though, there is work involved in maintaining one's own place: domestic work.
Early on, that work may feel enjoyable, but over time there is a decent chance it will become cumbersome and may even get in the way of better things to do on a weekend or gorgeous sunny afternoon. When domestic chores get in the way of life, it's a good time to consider outsourcing.
What should one outsource? The answer to that question will be different for everyone reading this piece. The reality is that the chores that may be enjoyable to one person may be downright painful, emotionally and physically, for another. This is when it's time to bring in the pros, or at least someone who doesn't mind the chore you hate because they are being paid to do it.
Some people love to clean and organize their closets, and not just clothing closets either. There are toy closets, linen closets, tool closets, food closets, or pantries. Then there are those who would prefer to hide in the one clean closet to avoid cleaning and organizing the messy ones. Hiring someone to take care of your closets is beneficial for two reasons.
First, your closet organizer will not be nearly as attached to that t-shirt which no longer fits but is important because some lead singer from a band you don't even listen to anymore shook his sweaty head at you while you were wearing it. Second, your closet organizer can see space and your stored items from a completely different perspective.
If you can get past the idea of someone else handling your underwear, outsourcing laundry can be a huge time saver. While we've come a long way from beating clothes against the rocks and using washboards, today the laundry really mostly washes itself. What it doesn't do is fold itself and put itself away.
Outsourcing someone to fold and put away laundry presents too many potential issues of the wrong clothes ending up in the wrong drawer, especially if you're talking about a family's worth of clothing. But, dropping clothes off dirty and retrieving them clean and folded takes about 5 minutes, 10 if you have trouble finding a parking space. After that, putting them away shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes. And now, a domestic chore that normally takes hours has just been knocked down to 15 minutes, 20 if you're sipping an afternoon latte while doing it.
We all need food and with more and more reports about food additives leading to diabetes, high blood pressure or even cancer, it's important to know exactly what you are putting into your body. The downside though is that grocery shopping takes time, especially if you want to read labels and pick your own meats, fruits, and vegetables.
Thanks to the internet and mobile apps, many grocery stores offer online grocery shopping and delivery. This lovely little system can cut grocery shopping time from 3 hours to about 45 minutes. Although it can take some time initially to set yourself up and become familiar with a site's shopping software, in the long run it is a huge time saver. Best of all, it can be done at night while in pyjamas from the comfort of your own home.
There are several subsets of cleaning that could be addressed, but generally speaking if you don't love to clean, hire someone to do it for you. Whether it's your apartment, house or
car, it's a chore that can take hours, will always need to be done and is never finished. In the case of cleaning, this also applies to pools, gutters and even your grill.
Spend your time instead doing something more productive and enjoyable like playing with the kids, reading a book, or planning a much needed date night or girls night out.
The difference between a beautiful outside and one that people will cross the street to avoid is maintenance. Different from indoor cleaning and tidying, outdoor work can be backbreaking. When left unattended, weeds will take over flowerbeds and lawns, and it can take hours of being hunched over to pull them out from the roots.
In addition to those nasty roots, there is the mowing and watering, truly as unglamorous as weeding and equally time consuming. Hire someone to mow the lawn, and install a sprinkler system and yank out those weeds. Spending time outside can be healthy and rejuvenating, but wouldn't it be more fun to play a round of golf?
This is not a topic many people like to discuss in mixed company, but if you have a home, you have bugs and possibly more. Traps and sprays may work in the short term, but given people's busy lives, who can really remember to check traps and refill bait stations every 30-90 days without fail? Hire a pest management company.
These people are trained to spray chemicals, fill bait traps and monitor activity. It's well worth the investment to avoid dark crawl spaces, handling chemicals, and never really being sure of what might be lurking in that basement…
With the number of self-proclaimed foodies, cooking reality shows, and food blogs on the rise, this may not seem like a chore or anything that people would want to outsource. But believe it or not, there are people who do not enjoy cooking, cringe at creativity in the kitchen, and only cook because they need to eat and possibly feed a family. If you are one of those people, outsource it.
There are more and more restaurants that will prepare a family-style meal to be pre-ordered and delivered. There are also grocery stores like Fresh Direct, which will deliver frozen pre-made meals right to your door. Personal chefs are another option, especially if you have specific dietary needs. In some cases these meals may be healthier options than the big brand frozen dinners available in the grocery store, and if you really hate to cook, it can be worth exploring the options.
