According to some opinions, staying indoors and playing video games goes hand in hand with being an out-of-shape couch potato. But does it really? A newish crop of fitness games for home video game consoles like the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox, and Sony PlayStation are challenging the stereotype of the sedentary gamer. So-called “exergaming” is a way to combine video games with physical fitness and weight loss. In fact, several scientific studies of exergames showed that both light (golf) and intense active games (boxing) can burn up to 7.2 calories per minute.
Here’s a list of 10 active video games that can help you shed those unwanted pounds. Some require special equipment like Microsoft’s Kinect motion sensing device, a Wii Balance Board, dance pads, or a heart monitor.
Sports Champions 2: Made in 2012 for Sony PlayStation 3, SC 2 uses motion-sensing game controller PlayStation Move to allow players to take part in a variety of virtual sports, including boxing, table tennis, gladiator duel, archery, disc golf, bowling, and skiing.
Just Dance: Ubisoft’s dancing game for the Wii lets players earn points by performing dance moves to hit songs, burning up to 200 calories in 30 minutes, according to one source. Ubisoft just released the 5th edition of the game: Just Dance 2014.
Wii Fit U: Nintendo’s foray into gaming exclusively for getting in shape — as opposed to fun games that are also active — Wii Fit U incorporates the use of the Wii Balance Board and GamePad and features a bunch of exercises including jogging, yoga, and strength training. It can be “played” with an optional Fit Meter to measure activity.
Dance Dance Revolution: Perhaps the oldest of the exergames, Konami’s DDR first came out way back in 1998. One guy recently wrote about losing 13 pounds by playing an old version of Dance Dance Revolution every morning.
Your Shape– Fitness Evolved: This game for the X-Box 360 requires a Kinect sensor to walk and talk you through exercises like martial arts moves, yoga, and strength training. Difficulty level is calculated according to your age, weight, and habits.
Nike+ Kinect Training: Using your Kinect, this game puts you through exercise routines constructed from over 100 different drills. Choose from various workout time lengths and track your progress on an accompanying mobile app.
Zumba Fitness World Party: This Wii game includes 45 dance-fitness classes in 30 dance styles including hip hop, salsa, and Bollywood, set to a hit soundtrack.
Xbox Fitness: The latest in Microsoft’s active game repertoire is a service only available on the Xbox One console. Xbox Fitness uses the Kinect sensor and features exercise videos from top trainers. The game monitors the player’s heart rate; estimates calories burned, and provides feedback on form, power, and balance.
Kinect Sports: In seasons one and two of this popular game, players enjoy 13 different sports such as soccer, golf, and skiing. Push your avatar (and your body) while having fun!
EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp: Ever wanted to test your fitness level against football players? This Wii game may be the next best thing. Use EA Sports Active body-tracking system and put yourself through 70 drills and challenges for strength and conditioning.
