Android One Initiative Will Hit India in October

Handset manufacturer Spice announced that the first Android One smartphone will be available in India right before the festival of lights known as Diwali, which is celebrated on October 23. The Android One platform was announced at this year's Google I/O, and will allow manufacturers in emerging countries, like India, to distribute affordable devices.

The initiative will bring Google’s hardware to vendors, who will be able to customize the initial design. All Android One devices will come with stock Android, and manufacturers will have the option to add apps of their own.

The general device specs cover a 4.5-inch smartphone, will support dual SIM, FM radio, and an SD card slot, among other capabilities. At just $100, it's bound to draw attention in emerging markets. This Android smartphone will also be available in other developing countries.

The tech giant announced partnerships with two other manufacturers from India for the Android One platform, Micromax and Karbonn Mobiles. Google plans to spend an overall $1 billion on marketing to ensure that the $100 Android One has a successful launch. Reports claim that Sundar Pichai, Head of Android, is expected to visit India for the launch.
