Most people think monitors are all the same except for size, but in fact there are many different technologies determining functionality. There are three major types: Vertical Alignment (VA), Twisted Nematic (TN), and In-Plane Switching (IPS).
Suffice it to say that the most versatile and expensive is IPS, and VA panels are an improvement on the lower-quality, but less expensive, TN. Depending on your needs and budget, any of these three technologies can serve your needs. Which will do best for you? Let’s find out.
A low-end 21.5” LED monitor using TN panel technology with some mid-level features, this ASUS monitor has adjustable video modes for theater watching or gaming via ASCR (Asus Smart Contrast Ratio) Technology, and can be adjusted to any angle or height.
It comes with VGA, DVI, and HDMI connectors, so you can easily connect to either game consoles or TV tuners. Unfortunately, the built-in speakers aren’t up to spec, though. It’s high-definition (HD) up to 1920 x 1080p, with a 5ms response time for your gaming convenience.
This is an affordable TN monitor for the home or office. It uses LED instead of the typical CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps) as a backlight, so it’s energy efficient. You get 24’ of HD at a maximum of 1920 x 1080p with an agreeable contrast setting for a crisp picture, though it’s a bit bright for night viewing.
It has VGA and DVI ports and is VESA mount compatible. The video is distorted when viewed off-angle vertically, and slightly less so from the sides. The audio isn’t outstanding, but overall it’s a solid buy for the price.
This was actually the first 27’ VA monitor. Is it an improvement on the TN? Well, it is HD 1920 x 1080p LED-lit with a 4ms response time and 20,000,000:1 contrast. Audio is so-so but it comes with HDMI, VGA, and DVI connections. Definitely an improvement overall, but that’s to be expected for the higher price.
For enthusiastic, but non-techy gamers, this could be the 24” monitor to beat in terms of price. Still using TN tech, it’s on the expensive side, but is really bright (250 candelas per square meter) with high contrast (5,000,000:1) for a TN, so the colors pop. This makes for awesome gameplay if you face it square to the front. Shift a little, however, and it loses its color quality.
Still 5ms response time, with no lag in gameplay, and it’s energy-efficient (26 watts), which is good if you tend to play for hours on end. You can connect via VGA, DVI, and HDMI. Overall, choosing between this and an IPS monitor at the same or lower price is tricky.
It’s only 23” but what’s an inch between friends? Already using IPS technology, this monitor has one of the fastest response times compared to other IPSs in the same price range. This Asus clocks in at 5ms (a typical IPS monitor maxes out at 8ms) and can be viewed from up to a 178 degree angle on all sides with no loss in color quality.
It connects via DVI, VGA, and HDMI. Plus, it has low power consumption because it’s LED-kit. The only drawback with this monitor? It only tilts up or down and can’t be wall-mounted. Other than that, this is probably the best budget monitor you’ll find. Oh, did I mention it’s made of 80% recycled materials?
