Dell Will Accept Bitcoin

Computer manufacturer Dell is set to begin accepting payments in popular cryptocurrency Bitcoin, making it the largest e-commerce vendor to approve the virtual payment method.

“We put this together quickly as a result of listening to our customers,” said David Frink, a Dell spokesman. “It’s another way for customers to have a relationship with Dell.”

Founder and CEO Michael Dell sounded off on Twitter about Dell’s new direction.

“Dell is now the world’s largest e-commerce business to accept bitcoin,” said Dell, saying that the company’s decision was based on the premise that customers should “buy digital with digital.” All upcoming Bitcoin purchases made on the Dell website will come with a 10% discount.

Dell has partnered with Coinbase, a third-party payment processor that converts customers’ Bitcoins into dollars.

“Merchants are really waking up and seeing just how powerful using Bitcoin as a payment option is,” said Adam White, director of business development and strategy at Coinbase. “Adding Dell to our roster of merchants that accept Bitcoin is a great signal for the industry that Bitcoin is here to stay.”

Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency started in 2009, has been steadily gaining popularity as a legitimate payment method in the past year. Dell is the latest and biggest retailer to accept Bitcoin.
