Carlos Slim, billionaire entrepreneur who regularly tops the list of richest people in the world, has called for a three-day workweek counterbalanced by longer hours and a higher retirement age. Slim says this would improve our quality of life and lead to a more productive workforce.
The billionaire said that if we could spread the workload over a full week, with workers doing 10 to 11 hour shifts, we could end up creating a happier, more content workforce.
“With three work days a week, we would have more time to relax; for quality of life,” Slim told the Financial Times.
Slim shared his thoughts on the modern workweek at the Growing Together-- States and Enterprises conference in Paraguay, attended by businessmen and political figures from all over South America.
He added that having four days off, as opposed to the current two, would generate new entertainment activities and other ways of being occupied. He also said that current retirement age comes from a time when the life expectancy was lower, and he expects to see it rise to 70 or 75.
Slim employs some of these philosophies in his telecommunications company, the Mexican Telmex. Employees who joined Telmex in their teenage years have access to early retirement, and anyone who wants to continue working for Telmex past their retirement age can do so at full pay and a reduced workload of four work days a week.
