What is the World's Best-selling Smartphone?

All eyes and ears are on the upcoming launch of the latest iPhone, rumoured to appear in September. In this next-generation iPhone mania, it seems like all other iPhones have lost their lustre. What did happen to the rest of the iPhone family?

Market researcher Counterpoint conducted a survey that found Apple's iPhone 5S was the best-selling smartphone, surpassing the Samsung Galaxy S5, S4, and Note 3 smartphone sales in May of this year. It does sound a bit disappointing for Samsung, considering the electronics giant released the Galaxy S5 in April, and the iPhone 5S has been on the shelves since last September.

The survey found that 7 million  iPhone 5S handsets were sold, while the Samsung's Galaxy S5 sold 5 million handsets. Counterpoint amassed this sales data from channel surveys across 35 countries.

While the 5S is still going-strong, the 5C hasn't been so lucky. Counterpoint reports that Apple's budget phone lagged behind older models of Samsung in May.

Apart from Apple and Samsung, there was another smartphone maker that topped the sales charts in May – the Chinese electronics company Xiaomi. Two Xiaomi models, the Android MI3 and Hongmi Redrice, have proven themselves a bargain for the performance and quality they offer.

Counterpoint’s channel research also shows that in the top 10 list, nearly 40% of the smartphones sold were actually phablets, indicating that people want larger displays. Counterpoint also reckons that if this trend continues in Apple's manufacturing process, and if the company releases a phablet this year, it will likely become a best-seller within two months of availability.

Well done, Apple!
