If you want to buy a Tesla but can't afford it, the electrical car manufacturer has great news for you. CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla will release a new, smaller, and more affordable car, called the Model 3. As this is the company's third generation car, its name is only appropriate.
In an exclusive interview for Autoexpress, Elon Musk revealed Tesla's plans for a new car that will rival the BMW 3 Series. Since the previous two models were the S (sedan) and the X (crossover SUV), Tesla initially wanted to name its new, 20% smaller model E. It turned out Ford has legal rights to that name.
He says, “We were going to call it model E for a while and then Ford sued us saying it wanted to use the Model E – I thought this is crazy, Ford’s trying to kill sex! So we’ll have to think of another name. The new model is going to be called Model III, we’ll have three bars to represent it and it’ll be S III X!”
Musk says the Model III will have a range of over 200 miles, with a strong performance just like the Model S. And just as with previous models, third generation users will have free access to Tesla's Supercharger network. Tesla's S III X will be unveiled in 2016 and up for sale by 2017, with a retail price tag of about $35,000, reports Autoexpress.
The key feature this new model boasts is its cheaper battery technology, which will be produced in Tesla's upcoming factory. The Gigafactory is said to produce batteries for all Tesla models, as well as for other customers (Nissan and Mercedes are rumoured). The plant will also have a stationary storage programme for solar and wind energy. Several US states are being considered for the plant's location, including New Mexico, Texas, California, Nevada, and Arizona.
If you want to purchase any Tesla Model, you can't do that with a standard dealer deal. You have to go directly to a Tesla retailer.
