Celebrate the App Store’s Sixth Birthday with Numbers

Apple’s App Store turns six today. In six years, Apple has grown to dominate the mobile arena and introduce a new way of buying and consuming software, with sales amounting to about $30 billion, according to Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillet.

Gillet also claims global app sales will reach $100 million in the next 15 years. Still, this represents only a small piece of the pie. The market grows to giant proportions once we start factoring in hardware, services, and subscriptions.

"That's only measuring what people paid through app stores," Gillett says. "It turns out, there is a lot of free apps that go with services that are paid for outside the app store, or are tied to hardware purchases that would not have happened otherwise."

The App store currently boasts about 1.2 million apps. In contrast, Google’s Play store stocks over 1.5 million. Play Store downloads overtook the App store for the first time last year, a phenomenon probably due to emerging Android markets such as Russia and Brazil.

Still, out of all of those sales, Apple is the clear winner. Numbers mean nothing when you look at the fact that despite lower sales, the App Store managed to generate double the revenue of the Play Store. Not a bad birthday, App Store.
