LG Develops 18-inch Flexible Display, Will Make a 50-inch Roll-up TV

Flexible display technology somehow got lost in today’s high-tech hype, which has been focused on smart-wearables, 3D touch devices, robots making smartphones, virtual reality gadgets, and Raspberry Pi innovations. But they might be ready to make their big entrance. LG has developed an 18-inch flexible OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) Display with a 30R curving radius.

You just can't help but imagine that one day, you’ll be able to roll up your TV and take it on your camping trip. According to LG, this dream could be a reality very soon. “Overcoming the 10-inch limit was the biggest task in the OLED industry. As we succeeded in developing 18-inch OLEDs, a rollable TV bigger than 50 inches will be feasible in the near future,” says an LG official.

I guess size matters. The LG flagship Display is the biggest in the world, combining transparent OLED panel technology at 18-inches. The LG Display utilizes OLED, and not regular LCD technology as most manufacturers do. The good news about OLED is that the technology requires less power to display images because the display itself works without a backlight. Since OLED displays don't need a separate backlight layer, these flexible displays can be much thinner than regular LCDs.

The 30R radius of curvature means that the display can be rolled up in a one-inch tube. LG owes the flexibility of its display to polyimide film, a polymer that balances physical, chemical, and electrical properties perfectly.

LG has truly altered the future of TVs. We can't wait for the 50-inch version!
