The iPhone 6 Rumour Roundup

Apple’s iPhone 6 is one of the most hotly anticipated new iPhones in history.

Although the iPhone 5, 5C, and 5S contained upgraded cameras, faster processors, and, in the case of the 5s, a fingerprint reader, cosmetic changes were fairly minimal. The form factor was slightly different, but for many iPhone users there wasn’t quite enough novelty to tempt them into an upgrade.

It’s fair to say that people expect a little more from the forthcoming iPhone 6, anticipated to arrive “in the fall.” Based on past events, this will probably mean September.

We’ve taken the time to examine some of the rumours surrounding the iPhone 6, and make our calls on how likely each rumour is to come to fruition. As always, the exact details are a closely- guarded secret, but leaks about Apple products seem to be increasingly accurate these days. You can be reasonably confident that you’ll see at least some of these features in the new device.

1. Super Strong Glass

There have been many leaks about the super strong “Sapphire” glass, which is said to be practically indestructible. There is even a YouTube video of a screen claimed to be for the iPhone 6.

LIKELIHOOD FACTOR: 8/10

2. Two Larger Sizes

Although Steve Jobs famously said that Apple always wanted iPhones to be operable with one hand, the size has begun to creep up. Large “phablet” format devices have also proved popular with many manufacturers. As such, it’s widely thought that Apple will release the iPhone 6 in two sizes, both larger than the current iPhone 5 range.

If you want the larger version, you might have to be willing to wait-- many pundits seem to think it will take longer to arrive.

LIKELIHOOD FACTOR: 7/10

3. Thinner design

This one really does seem more likely than not, with a plethora of online “leaked” photos all showing a rather more svelte device than we’ve seen in the past.

LIKELIHOOD FACTOR: 9/10

4. A Curved LCD Screen

There are plenty of concept photos or alleged “leaked” images of the iPhone 6’s curved LCD screen. Some of the more impressive ones even show the current volume buttons being replaced with side mounted touchscreen replacements.

A design like this would silence those who think the iPhone has looked the same for too long—but sadly this is perhaps one of the more far-fetched rumours.

LIKELIHOOD FACTOR: 4/10

5. Clever New Headphones

Apple’s standard earbuds have never had a great reputation. Even the new ones that came with the 5S weren’t exactly music to our ears.

Now, with Apple’s well-publicized buy-out of Dr Dre’s “Beats” range, it’s fair to assume that Beats headphones may find their way into the iPhone range, possibly with biometric sensors linked to the health features of iOS 8 that have already been announced.

Whether such a bonus item would come in the box, however, remains to be seen. It’s perhaps just as likely that Apple will charge for them as an accessory.

LIKELIHOOD FACTOR: 7/10
