Samsung Preps to Launch a Virtual Reality Headset, Image Leaks

Samsung seems to be fast-forwarding in the virtual reality market by supposedly launching its own VR headset, as a leaked image appeared on Sammobile today. Sammobile confirms that the company is indeed working on a virtual reality headset, dubbed Gear VR, and that it will be launched at the Berlin Consumer Electronics Unlimited 2014 fair.

Samsung's Gear VR is like Google's cardboard headset, only with Oculus under the hood, and elastic headband and cushions on the sides for the user’s comfort. For Gear VR's software, Samsung has joined forces with the Facebook-owned Oculus. Samsung has developed the hardware itself.

The idea of Samsung's Gear VR is much like the cardboard VR though – you dock a Samsung smartphone into the VR device using USB 3.0, and by utilizing the smartphone’s gyroscope, accelerometer, and processing power, users can achieve the virtual reality effect.

As the image shows, there is a See Through button on the right side of the device that makes it easy for the user to switch between virtual reality and actual reality using the smartphone's back-facing camera sensor. This way, the user isn’t inconvenienced by having to take the headset on and off. Under the See Through button, there's a Touch Pad that lets users cruise around their Samsung's smartphone user interface.

The VR experience is guaranteed by the AMOLED technology that Samsung's smartphones have implemented in their displays.

So far, so good, Samsung. Let's get that fair started, yeah?
