Surprise! These Tech Products are Actually Made in the USA

With the steady migration of manufacturing out of the United States and into emerging economies, you might think that America no longer makes anything. You’d be wrong. Even in the case of tech products, now widely associated with the near-ubiquitous “Made in China” label, the US is still designing, innovating, and yes,  even manufacturing.

Let’s not beat around the bush: the country’s technology manufacturing industry could use a shot in the arm. According to a Forbes article, over the last ten years, employment has dropped by 20% from its pre-recession peak and shipments have declined by a whopping 62%. As this downward trend continues, it would be easy to dismiss the US tech-building industry as dead in the water. Yet, there are arguments that a die-hard core will remain in the country — and perhaps even thrive.

Conventional macroeconomic models show that the comparative advantage of a manufacturing country with cheap labour dissipates when its own economy grows, while wages — as well as domestic buying-power and currency rates — rise accordingly. In other words, if and when it’s not as cheap to build computers in China, production could stop leaving the US and might even return. But there are a variety of factors that prevent, or at least significantly delay, that from happening. After all, US workers still make on average 7.4 times more than Chinese workers, though US productivity is reportedly higher. What the States really has are start-ups, entrepreneurs, and cutting-edge products from established tech firms.

Here’s a list of 10 tech products that can still proudly wear the “Made in the USA” badge:

Google Glass: This shape-of-things-to-come product is made in the great state of California and comes with a healthy $1,500 price point.

Mac Pro desktop: The new Mac Pro line is only 6 months old and is selling like hotcakes — so much that the US manufacturing team can hardly keep up with demand.

Legacy Audio: This leading American maker of high-end audio equipment for home and recording studio use manufactures all its systems domestically.

Motorola Moto X Android phone: Billed as “the first smartphone designed, engineered and assembled in the USA,” the Moto X was released in August of 2013.

Apple A5 chips: Korean tech giant Samsung manufactures processor chips for iPads, iPhones, and Apple TV products at their plant in Austin, Texas.

E-cigarettes: Smoking may be on the decline, but like it or not, nicotine is here to stay. PrimeVapor is a major e-cig brand that makes flavoured vapes, and it’s based in the US of A.

Tesla Motors: Electric carmaker and original equipment manufacturer Tesla builds its Model S vehicles as well as parts for other car companies at the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California.

Intel Inside: While semiconductors are usually made in Asia, Intel makes the majority of its chipsets and microprocessors in the US.

Computers: Small American boutique brands Origin PC, Falcon Northwest gaming PCs, Maingear PCs, Velocity Micro, as well as Chinese Lenovo Think Pads, are all built in the USA.

WoW: That’s right, World of Warcraft, the most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game of all time, is made in the USA by Irvine, California’s Blizzard Entertainment.
