When the beloved children’s series “Reading Rainbow” ended in 2006 after a 23 year run on PBS, host LeVar Burton (also known to Star Trek fans as Geordi LaForge) bought the rights. He recently decided to set up a Kickstarter to bring the show back. What happened next was a surprise to both Burton and the Kickstarter platform.
Burton asked for an ambitious $1 million at the outset of the campaign, which he earned in less than one day. At the close of the campaign on Wednesday, he had amassed $5 million dollars in backer donations. The incentive is Kickstarter’s fifth most successful campaign ever, in terms of dollars raised.
The campaign set a record for most backers in a Kickstarter-- over 105,000 to be exact. “Reading Rainbow” had already been reinvented as a tablet app, but Burton wanted to use the crowd-funding platform to make a browser-based version. Now, “Reading Rainbow” is also coming to home consoles like the XBox and Playstation, streaming boxes like Apple TV and Roku, and will be launching a free version in 7,500 classrooms across the U.S.
"To reach kids everywhere, we need to be everywhere," Burton wrote on his Kickstarter page. It seems his wish is about to come true.
