eProfits Game Of The Week: Shovel Knight
GAME OF THE WEEK

“With this spade, I dub thee...Shovel Knight! Arise, sir Shoveler!”

Seriously, how can you resist a game called Shovel Knight? This cutesy platformer’s got our hearts and minds this week, so let’s take a look.

See us shovelling about in a knightly fashion, digging up cabbages, and bouncing off them like so many trampolines. See the decisive strokes with which we lob skeleton skulls at our foes, smiting them in the name of earthly excavation.

If you’ve ever loved Castlevania or Metroid, this here’s the game for you. Shovel Knight plays like a classic Metroidvania sidescroller, albeit with some fantastic shake-ups to the established formula. The main mechanic in play, the shovel pogo bounce, takes its cue straight from the classic Duck Tales game and brilliantly adapts it to the context of Shovel Knight. The tight 2D platforming is polished to a high sheen, having you jump, dig, bounce, propel, and launch yourself across dangerous woods, volcanoes, and mountains.

Shovel Knight is available for PC, Mac, Linux, and Wii U as of last month, but we feel the 3DS is the definitive version. If you’re lucky enough to have one, this game is a must-buy. The 3D effects are surprisingly immersive for a 2D title, and the dual-screen setup can only be a bonus.

It’ll be said many times, but Shovel Knight is indeed a love letter to the classic 2D platformer, affectionately refined for the new age. Refresh your retro reflexes and give this one a whirl -- we guarantee you’ll “dig” it.
