Google Commemorates WWI With Virtual Museum

This year, the world mournfully commemorates the centenary of the Great War. Almost 100 years ago, Gavrilo Princip fired the shot heard round the world in Sarajevo, and Google has set up a fantastic trip through the aftermath.

One of the more creative commemorations, Google’s virtual WWI museum brings together a veritable treasure chest of paintings, letters, photos, and artifacts that tell the story of the First World War. It’s a fantastically insightful walk through history, even if it is far from complete. Google has paired up with museums and archives to bring us a comprehensive account of the Great War, and it’s adding to it constantly.

The materials from the Bundesarchiv and King’s College London Archives, among others, paint a vivid and unnerving picture of life in a time of global conflict. Propaganda, postcards, and paintings come together to tell a story that must never be forgotten, a story that’s been  ambitiously collected and meticulously organized. Take a trip through history, and see why so many folk say “Lest we forget.”
