Google Play Games Wants to Rival Game Center

Google launched its Play Games app at the beginning of May, apparently to rival Apple’s Game Center. At their annual I/O conference, Google introduced a slew of new Play Games features that make the app a serious Game Center contender.

A standout feature being introduced is Game Profiles. Taking plenty of cues from iOS’s Game Center, Game Profiles rolls together achievements, titles and accomplishments into one platform. Players will be able to earn experience points and translate them into vanity titles, part of a Game Profiles metagame.

Another feature, Quests, will enable developers to assign timed objectives to their games with no updates or add-ons involved.

"For example, if players participate in a 'Collect 50 green treasures this weekend' quest, game services will notify your game of who's succeeded after it receives 'green treasures' events from their gameplay. You can reward successful players for completing a quest, and encourage them to engage more in your game,” clarified a Google spokesperson.

Cloud saves are also coming to Play Games, except that it’s no ordinary cloud save system -- the feature allows the developers themselves to store your save data. Google Play Games will also be a part of the new Android TV initiative, meaning you’ll now be able to play your Android games with a controller on your TV.
